‘Come fly with me’ features a dancing pair of pīwaiwaka | fantail, swooping and spreading their beautiful tail feathers as they carry banners of flowering mānuka and celebrate the abundance of food around them.

Although they are often known for their playful and curious nature, pīwaiwaka are actually some of Aotearoa’s fiercest little hunters. Their distinctive long tail feathers aren’t just beautiful — they help them twist and turn quickly through the air as they dart after insects.

Their favourites include moths, flies, spiders, wasps, beetles, and the occasional fruit — a tiny but mighty reminder of the important role they play in our ecosystems.

We are incredibly lucky in Aotearoa to share our gardens and bush with these joyful little companions. If you’d like to help protect our native birdlife, keeping an eye on our feline friends and supporting predator control can make a meaningful difference.

The Story Behind the Artwork

Created by Northland-based artist Katy Hayward, this illustration was inspired by her aroha for spending time on bush walks with her little family and the delight of being followed through the forest by these friendly little birds — often darting and dancing around her daughter as they explore.
