Huia
Fine Art Print
Featuring a female (long beak) and male (short beak) huia perched amongst native pūriri and pōhutukawa, this artwork honours one of Aotearoa’s most treasured and remembered extinct native birds.
Huia were once the largest of Aotearoa’s wattlebird species, admired for their beautiful song, glossy black plumage, and distinctive long tail feathers tipped with white. The remarkable difference in the beaks of male and female huia made them one of the most unique bird species in the world.
The last confirmed sighting of a huia was in 1907, though it is believed a small number of females may have survived into the 1920s.
To artist Katy Hayward, huia are a powerful reminder of the collective impact humans have on the natural world and how meaningful the choices we make each day can be. They speak to the beauty of our taonga in Aotearoa and the responsibility we carry to protect and nourish what remains.
A quiet reflection on loss, memory, and guardianship — and a celebration of the native species that continue to shape our identity and connection to place.
