‘So this is love’ captures a tender moment between a male and female miromiro | tomtit, perched together amongst flowering puawānanga | Clematis paniculata, accompanied by a friendly pīrorohu | bumblebee.

Miromiro are charming native songbirds of Aotearoa New Zealand, loved for their striking plumage and sweet, high-pitched calls. Often forming strong monogamous bonds, these birds work together through nesting and raising their young — a beautiful reminder of connection, care, and partnership in nature.

During breeding season, the male supports the female while she remains on the nest, bringing food and keeping watch nearby. Once the chicks hatch, both parents work together to raise their family.

The Story Behind the Artwork

Created by Northland-based artist Katy Hayward, this drawing was inspired by her aroha for spending time on bush walks with her young family and the joy of hearing — and occasionally spotting — these adorable native birds she lovingly calls “little forest pandas.”

The flowering puawānanga | Clematis paniculata featured throughout the work are also one of Katy’s favourite native plants, bringing brightness and delight to the ngahere each spring.
