The Light Between This work emerged from a period of reflection on journeys, both physical and personal. Inspired by the migration of the Kuaka, I began thinking about the distances we travel throughout our lives and the invisible threads that connect us to people, places and experiences along the way. I was interested in creating a sense of movement through memory and time. Layers of paint, drawing and erased marks were built up and partially obscured, allowing traces of earlier decisions to remain visible beneath the surface. For me, these layers reflect the way our histories continue to shape us, even as we move forward. As the work developed, I found myself returning to the idea that life is rarely defined by a single destination. Instead, it is shaped by the spaces in between — the moments of uncertainty, growth, reflection and change. The places where we pause long enough to consider where we have come from before deciding where to go next. Created during the season of Puanga, this painting became a quiet reflection on that in-between space. A reminder that while the path ahead is not always visible, we carry with us the knowledge, experiences and connections gathered along the way. Sometimes it is within that space between darkness and light, departure and return, that we discover what truly guides us forward.
