A quiet moment suspended in time.

Tagged Huia 1907 reflects on one of Aotearoa’s most treasured and remembered extinct native birds — the huia. Once admired for their striking glossy black plumage, distinctive white-tipped tail feathers, and remarkable sexual dimorphism, the huia has become a powerful symbol of both loss and responsibility.

Created in sealed chalk and charcoal on reclaimed chalkboard, this work intentionally sits between illustration and memory — softened edges, muted atmosphere, and a surface that feels both archival and fleeting.

Perched quietly with the gaze turned toward the viewer, the huia is accompanied by a small museum-style reference tag — a subtle nod to the way extinct species can become reduced to records, specimens, and fragments of remembrance. The date 1907 references the last widely accepted confirmed sighting of the huia.

This work asks us to consider what we value, what we preserve, and what stories remain once something is gone.

Created through layered mark-making and soft tonal shifts, the chalk medium echoes ideas of impermanence while inviting viewers to move closer and sit with the detail.
